Construction Katibougou High School

MALI | Education (Completed)
Initial position

Due to the very desolate state of the public education system in Mali, primary schools are largely offered by private schools, including the Néhémie Mali school in Katibougou, a large village north-east of Bamako.

In recent years, many good school leavers have made their way to universities via public high schools. However, the results were very sobering. Despite the good basis that was created, only about 3-4 out of 5 students completed their Matura. The overall diarrhea rate in public high schools is 80%–90%.

Commitment

The existing school consists of several buildings, which currently house a total of 10 classes and a kindergarten. Various extensions are planned, such as a library, laboratory, computer science, and additional classrooms.

In order to meet the grammar school's catchment area and state requirements, a building with 6 classrooms and an extension with 2-3 classrooms are required.

The school is pedagogically rated the best school in the region and enjoys a very good reputation with the responsible education authorities and the mayor. Currently, the Gymnasium is growing in stages as the students progress.

CHALLENGES
The political situation in Mali is considered unstable. There is war in the north of the country, the south is struggling with refugee flows, rapid population growth, high unemployment and a lack of infrastructure. There is a lack of funds to educate Mali's future generation.
OBJECTIVES
Between 90% and 100% of the high school graduates at Katibougou achieve the qualifications required for entry to a high school. These young people can stay in the region with the new grammar school and receive a much better grammar school education than in public grammar schools.
