Life for rejected children

MALI | accomodation (Completed)
Initial position

Traditionally, children who cannot be cared for are passed on within the family. As a result, the burden of care is distributed within the family and children can grow up in a family environment despite a poor starting position. The great poverty in the country today has severely weakened this social system.

Guest workers and students without family ties in the capital, or women from extremely impoverished families, are increasingly deciding to abandon their newborns or, in some cases, to kill them immediately after birth.

Commitment

So far, AVC Switzerland has supported the orphanage by donating materials via the local organization ACP Néhémie Mali. The project to expand the orphanage was initiated by the Traoré couple themselves and presented to us. Since the couple has been a member of the board of Néhémie Mali since 2005, we have also been friends for a long time.

CHALLENGES
Mali is socially in a downward spiral. 2/3 of the country is at war, 40% of the people cannot read or write and the same proportion of the population lives below the poverty line.
OBJECTIVES
In a first phase, the living situation of the orphans is to be improved and the capacity of the home is to be increased to up to 30-40 children. This first stage with the basic infrastructure such as the main building, fountain and surrounding wall can be expanded with little effort using additional building modules to create a home for up to 200 orphans.
