Joining the EU does not automatically solve a country's problems. Since the currency switched from the Bulgarian lev to the euro, prices have skyrocketed. Wages are not rising in line with the increased cost of living, and as a result, the number of »working poor«—people who cannot cover their living expenses with their low wages—is growing. They often find themselves in precarious housing situations.
