The Miracle of Pata Island
Meetings were monitored, and intimidation was part of everyday life. Our partner Pastor Junie had to go into hiding for a time. Before he left, he told his congregation: “Keep meeting! Keep praying! Don't lose your faith!”
What followed were two years of tension. Leading representatives of the Tausug Muslims stormed a meeting and warned the believers in no uncertain terms: those who continue risk their lives. A member of the congregation later said, “We were paralyzed with fear.” But Pastor Junie did not abandon his flock. He met with them secretly, strengthened them, and reminded them, "Do not be afraid! Ask God for wisdom!" And that is exactly what they did. They continued to gather—in secret. They prayed for their island. They waited for God to intervene.
As the local elections approached, everything seemed to be against them. The candidates were, of all people, the men responsible for their plight—the former mayor and the island chief of Pata. Pastor Junie prayed: “Lord, don't let your children suffer any longer under those who reject you.” Then the results came in – and no one had expected it: all the candidates from the persecutors' camp lost. Every single one. They lost their offices, their influence – and eventually left the island.
Today, the church is growing. What the refugees left behind became a blessing for the Christians. For Pastor Junie, it was more than a political change. It was a visible sign: God protects, provides, acts, and does more than we can imagine. The believers on Pata do not only pray for their own safety. They pray that God's kingdom will become visible on their island. Their story is not over. It is just beginning.
