Extraordinary Devotion
Maria’s little son, Oleg, was born healthy. While in kindergarten, he suffered a serious accident and has been blind and paralyzed ever since. With unwavering devotion, Maria devoted herself to his care. She played him cassettes with Bible stories to give him comfort and hope. Even after her son has grown large and heavy, she moves him several times a day to prevent pressure sores.
Maria took loving care of his personal hygiene. In difficult times, when Oleg had almost lost all will to live, she was always by his side. Maria cared for Oleg for 47 years entirely on her own.
Beyond Words
A turning point in Oleg’s life came when he found Jesus. Our Moldovan partner Viktor accompanied him during this time and asked him questions. Due to his disability, Oleg found it difficult to make himself understood. Nevertheless, he was able to express his love for Jesus. Despite his severe limitations, he radiated inner strength. The few words he spoke, along with his faith and confidence, left a lasting impression on those who met him.
Caring for Loved Ones
Maria also speaks of her fulfilling marriage, marked by love and mutual support. But her husband suffered a stroke and became bedridden as well. Until his death, she cared for her husband with the same devotion she has shown her son. The love between them was palpable until the very end: shortly before his death, her husband said he did not want to die, but to stay with her. He passed away a year after the stroke; Oleg followed a year later. For an entire year, Maria cared for two people in need of care all by herself—a feat of strength that is almost unimaginable.
Sustaining Faith
Maria loves Jesus with all her heart. During the Soviet occupation, she was not allowed to attend church. Today she would be permitted to, but now she no longer has the strength. All the more reason she is delighted by our visit and our gifts. Her daughter and grandson live with her and also receive relief supplies from Switzerland. Her joy is immense.
Despite all adversities, this elderly woman is filled with joy and peace. Her faith and her attitude are impressive. Her home is well-kept, and it is a blessing to spend time with her and listen as she shares stories from her life. We are the ones who have truly been blessed by this visit.
