A church that touches the nation
Chaos: rattling motorcycles, rusty cars, exhaust fumes, thick dust, bundles of hanging power cables, squalid shacks. In the midst of them, market stalls, people, rubbish, dozing street dogs. An arsenal of millions of grim gods in the ubiquitous temples and public cremations by the river mark the dreary ambiance of Kathmandu.
A bright contrast
Since 1997, AVC has been supporting and assisting a small but growing church movement in Kathmandu. The aim of the church is to spread hope by means of the Christian message and practical, social involvement. From Kathmandu to the remote valleys of Nepal.
Committed to children and adults
The small but growing parent church in Kathmandu has an affiliated training centre in which leaders and workers are trained in establishing churches in Nepal.
A home in Kathmandu accommodates around ten orphans.
One programme makes it possible for children with destitute parents to attend school.
Training programmes are carried out in Kathmandu and in various villages, some of them quite isolated. The programmes include literacy for adults, and training in the fields of health and hygiene, agriculture, human rights and dealing with the laws of the state.
In the training programmes, they purposefully make sure that there is a good mix of religions among the participants: Hindus, Buddhists and animists come into contact with Christians in a natural way. Many of them experience God in a very practical manner. This continuously leads to the founding of new churches, including house churches. The involvement of the church on all levels is received with great recognition on the part of the population, the local media and the authorities.
For multiplication purposes and to provide workers with solid training, the church is going to open a Bible school soon. There are also plans to expand the orphanage.
