Isolated from the rest of the world
Burma (Myanmar), largely isolated from the rest of the world, came into the international media spotlight in May 2008 and stirred people’s emotions: After Cyclone Nargis, along with a tidal wave, destroyed the Irrawaddy Delta, claiming 140 000 victims, the military dictatorship had difficulty accepting help from abroad. Things have barely changed since then.
Bible smuggling
AVC’s involvement began in 1990. Even back then, Christians were suffering under the abuse of power of local authorities and the ubiquitous spying. The great demand for Bibles was accompanied by an equally great shortage. The job was clear: Bibles urgently needed to be smuggled in. Through the campaigns that followed, contact to local Christians developed and a series of projects were initiated and/or supported.
Current projects
Bible printing and distribution
Today AVC is involved in printing and distributing Bibles in the country.
Motivational seminars
In cooperation with various church movements, over 5,000 church leaders and church members have been trained so far within the context of the CEP (Church Empowerment Program). After returning to their tribes and villages, many of them experience powerful spiritual awakenings with positive effects on their surroundings.
Training centre
In one of the provincial capitals of Burma, a training centre for members of the country’s various tribes exists since 1998. So far, well over 200 people per year have been trained in 17 training cycles. In this way, 30 tribes have been reached and nine churches planted.
An additional training opportunity is the “School of workers”, a three-month Bible training course with an eight-month internship and a one-month-long consolidation course.
Orphanage »short film
In northern Burma, through the initiative of a Chinese AVC co-worker, an orphanage has been set up. Sponsorships help to provide the orphans, currently 85 of them, mostly from the Kachin tribe, with a valuable foundation for their future through the team’s loving care.
School education
AVC supports two primary schools among the Akha tribe with 150 pupils, as well as a boarding house for 35 pupils from remote villages.
